Yes, hybrid working is on the rise, but do we get a hybrid workplace meaning? In general, it is described as a flexible model designed to support a distributed workplace and remote workforce. It often involves combining physical and virtual offices. Hybrid work environments allow employees to work from any location.
According to the McKinsey survey, 58% of employees reported increased productivity from hybrid work. In addition, 54% said that inclusion and diversity on the job had improved. Employee engagement also increased by 45%, and 36% reported improved customer satisfaction.
With this data, we understand the importance of hybrid working. Yes, it’s a great many advantages. The question is, can we bring such an idea into our current workplaces?

Shopify, an e-commerce company that has adopted a hybrid work model since the pandemic, is a case in point. To succeed, Shopify has established clear communication channels, including regular company-wide meetings and virtual “watercooler” conversations to help employees stay connected.
They have also implemented a flexible work policy, allowing employees to choose whether to work at home, at the office, or combine the two. Shopify has also provided various resources to support employee welfare, including access to mental health and wellness support programs.
Figma, understanding what people want.
Figma’s Human Resources team has launched an employee feedback survey. They asked their staff, “Do the Figma workers want to work in the office or look for flexibility?” After receiving feedback, the HR team discovered that flexibility meant something different to almost everyone.
While most employees agreed they were just as productive or more productive in their homes, they also said they had severe FOMO (fear of missing out). Finally, Figma focused on enhancing communication in hybrid work to strike a balance between them. It’s not to leave the communication on Zoom but to be more aware of the fatigue of virtual meetings.
HubSpot, a “remote-ish” company.
HubSpot is passionate about creating a culture where people can do their best. Some employees are doing the best they can in an office, while others are working from home. As a result, as indicated in their Culture Code, they believe results matter more than when or where they are produced. In other words, HubSpot has been a “remote” company.
HubSpot employees can choose from three options based on how well they are doing:
- @office: People show up at HubSpot’s office three or more days a week.
- @flex: Go to a HubSpot office two days a week or less.
- @home: People work mostly at home in a HubSpot-approved facility.
